Capozella and Ladas honored for work at conference champ.

WASHINGTON – One day after capturing four major conference awards between them, CUA freshmen Caleb Capozella and Joanna Ladas were named the Landmark Conference Male and Female Swimmers of the Week on Monday.  The first year standouts have now won the weekly awards a combined five times this season.

Capozella won three events at the conference championship over the weekend, and set a pair of school and conference records along the way.  On Friday, Capozella won the 200 IM with a record time of 1:54.83, while on Saturday he again posted a record-winning time, as he took first place in the 100 backstroke in 52.45 seconds.

The Wisconsin native then made it three titles in as many days with his performance in the 200 backstroke, as he won with a time of 1:53.65.  For his efforts, Capozella was named the Landmark Conference Male Swimmer and Rookie of the Year.

Like Capozella, Ladas won three titles over the weekend, and did so in record-breaking fashion.  First, she set the school and conference record in the 500 free, with her time of 5:07.08.  Next, Ladas won the 200 free with a school and conference record time of 1:56.16.  On Sunday, Ladas completed the trifecta by winning the 1650 free, as she touched first with a time of 17:31.64.

Ladas was also awarded Landmark Conference Swimmer and Rookie of the Meet honors as she helped lead the CUA women to an impressive third place showing in the team standings.
