CUA returns to action this weekend with two meets
WASHINGTON – Following more than a month since its last competition, the CUA swimming teams return to the pool this weekend with a pair of Landmark Conference meets. On Saturday, the Cardinals will head to Pennsylvania to take on Scranton before returning to the nation's capital to take on Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday.
CUA has been off since a tri-meet with Howard and VMI on December 4. That competition closed out a strong first semester of action for the Cardinals as the CUA men enter this weekend with a record of 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference and the women are 6-1 overall and 3-0 vs. conference competition.
Leading the way for the CUA women this season has been freshman Joanna Ladas, who has had terrific success in the early going. The first-year student-athlete has earned three swimmer of the week awards already, including two from the Landmark Conference and another from collegeswimming.com.
Along with Ladas other Cardinals that have done well this season include senior Lisa Brooks, juniors Katherine Kelly and Nicole Vitrone, sophomores Rose Buckley and Melanie Rebechi, and freshmen Annie Cannatella, Gabrielle Giambagno and Shannon Silsby.
Like the CUA women, the CUA men have been led by some new faces this year, including freshmen Caleb Capozella, Pat Flannery, Stephen Gill, Dominic Grillo, and Justin Kenyon. Capozella was named Landmark Conference male swimmer of the week on November 1 and has been solid right from the start for Head Coach Paul Waas.
Other Cardinals to keep an eye on this weekend include senior Luke Miller, junior Steve Henderson, and sophomores Brendan Place and Paul McGee.
Scranton and Merchant Marine Academy went head-to-head last weekend with Scranton's women earning a 142-91 victory and the Merchant Marine Academy men helping the Mariners earn a split with a 123-92 win.
CUA and Scranton will get things started at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while the Cardinals and Mariners will start at the same time on Sunday.
