Cardinals earn split with Mariners; four win two events
WASHINGTON – The CUA swimming teams wrapped up a busy weekend with a meet vs. Merchant Marine Academy on Sunday afternoon inside the DuFour Center. The Cardinal women downed the Mariners 124.5 to 71.5, while the men fell 111 to 86. Individually, Joanna Ladas, Gabby Giambagno, Shannon Silsby and Caleb Capozella all won two events.
In women's action, Ladas won the 1000 free with a time of 11:16.64 and she also took first in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:17.16. Lisa Brooks was second in the 200 IM, as she finished the race in 2:22.84.
Gabby Giambagno took first in the 200 free as she finished in 2:05.55 and Rachel Berry finished the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:03.95 to earn nine first place points. Giambagno also won the 500 free with a time of 5:37.71 with Annie Cannatella taking second place (5:42.12).
CUA dominated the 100 free, taking the first three spots led by Emily Nguyen who posted a time of 59.11 seconds. Ashley Wilson (59.33) and Rose Buckley (1:00.03) placed second and third, respectively, to give the Cardinals 16 total points from the event.
In the 50 free Shannon Silsby was first with a time of 26.45 seconds, while Wilson (27.05) and Kristen Gunn (27.32) went three-four, respectively. Silsby later took first in the 100 backstroke, completing the race in 1:03.37, while Gunn took second with a time of 1:05.09.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Kristen Gunn, Lisa Brooks, Melanie Rebechi and Ashley Wilson won their event with a time of 2:00.61 to earn 11 points for the Cardinals
On the men's side, Capozella won the 200 free as he completed the race in a time of 1:46.86 and he added a second first place finish in the 100 backstroke, finishing in a time of 53.59 seconds.
In the 100 breaststroke Luke Miller (1:07.17) and Brendan Place (1:07.69) went one-two, respectively, while Justin Kenyon took second in the 1000 free as he finished in 10:24.31.
In the men's 400-yard freestyle relay, CUA took the top three spots including a first place time of 3:22.49 by Pat Flannery, Dominic Grillo, Brian Jones and Caleb Capozella.
Brendan Reilly, Brendan Place, Steve Henderson and Steve Gill were second (3:28.41) and Jakub Deptula, Paul McGee, Chris Ryan and Jacob Martin came in third (3:42.56).
CUA next heads to Washington & Lee on January 22 where the Cardinals will take on the Generals as well as Marymount. Start time is slated for 2 p.m.
