Greyhounds Prey on Cards
Cards struggle from the line

2/17/2008

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University womens basketball team lost in its final home game of the season to the Moravian College Greyhounds (15-8, 8-4 Landmark), 81-57 Sunday afternoon. This lose puts the Cardinals at 9-15 overall and 4-9 in the Landmark Conference.

The Cardinals got off to a slow start, but their defense kept the Greyhounds within reach. With a mere 13 minutes left in the first, freshman Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./ North Rockland) hit a three and things looked up for the Cards from there. Classmate Jenn Canale (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) followed with a swoosh from the paint but it wasn't enough to Moravian.  A pair of late technicals gave the Greyhounds opportunites from the line giving them a 20-point lead at the break.

CUA shot well from he floor hitting 44.4 percent from the field, 16.7 percent from beyond the arc and 42.9 percent from the line. Peterson was the leading scorer for the Cards with 14 points. Sophmore Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./ Catoctin) and junior teammate Jessica Schiavoni (Winchester, Va./ John Handley) led the Cards with four rebounds apiece. CUA outrebounded Moravian 19-16. At the half, the score was 28-48 in favor of the ‘Hounds.

Things started looking up for the Cards in the second half. Freshman Lauren McPeak (Linwood, N.J./ Mainland Regional) dominated in the second half, leading the Cards both offensively and defensively. CUA scored first, a shot from the field by McPeak, and the Cardinals tried to overcome the large deficit but it wasn't enough.  Trouble at the line and turnovers were too much for the Cards as they fell short 81-57.

Peterson led the Cardinals with 16 points and Robinson in rebounds with 10. McPeak had three blocks and five rebounds while scoring six points. CUA outrebounded the Greyhounds 42-41 and had five blocks. The Cards hit 35.5 percent of their shots in the paint, 14.3 percent from beyond the arc and 55 percent from the line.  Two of the biggest factors, however, were CUA's 30 turnovers and Moravian's 75 percent shooting from the line.

The Catholic University Cardinals will play at Landmark Conference rival Goucher College on February 23rd at 5:30 p.m.
