Cards Finish Season with a 72-61 Victory
Robinson scores 20 in the win

2/23/2008

TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University basketball squad concluded its season with a 72-61 win over the Goucher Gophers (7-17, 2-12 Landmark) in both teams' final conference game.  The Cardinals finish the season 10-15 overall and 5-9 in their first season in the Landmark Conference.

The first half, the Cardinal defense struggled to stop a hot shooting Gopher offense.  Goucher shot 41.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from three hitting 2-4 from beyond the arc.  The Cards managed to keep it close, however, and went into the break trailing by one point 31-30.

In the second half, the CUA offense caught fire shooting 54.8 percent and 40 percent from three while the defense also stepped it up.  A few runs allowed the Cards to gain a small lead which they managed to hold onto in the closing minutes resulting in a 72-61 final and a win in their final game.

Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin High School) led the Cards with 20 points for the game.  This is the first time since mid January that Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) did not lead CUA in scoring.  However, she did have a solid game with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Junior captain Jessica Schiavoni (Winchester, Va./John Handley) posted 17 points and five rebounds while freshman Kerri Confrey (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) had eight points, as many rebounds and 11 assists.  The Cardinal defense forced 25 Goucher turnovers and allowed just two scorers to hit double digits.

The Cards fell short of the conference tournament but will lose no one from this year's squad which started three or more freshmen almost every game.
