CUA looks to improve postseason position this weekend
WASHINGTON - The regular season concludes on Saturday evening when CUA travels north to face the Goucher Gophers. The Cardinals are looking to lock down a home game in next week's Landmark Conference Tournament, while the Gophers look to end their season on a high note.
CUA split its two games last weekend, falling to No. 13 Juniata in the final seconds, before bouncing back to easily defeat Susquehanna the next day. Goucher meanwhile, is looking for its first win since downing Valley Forge Christian on January 17.
CUA looks for its 20th win of the season on Saturday, which would tie the mark for the second most victories in a single season. The last time CUA won 20 games was the 2004-05 season.
Junior Jill Woerner surpassed the 1,000-point plateau last weekend at Susquehanna. The Providence native scored her milestone basket in the first half, following a steal that she took coast-to-coast for a layup. Woerner, who is the 18th woman in school history to score 1,000 points, enters Saturday's game with 1,007 points.
CUA is 30th in the country and second in the Landmark Conference in assists, averaging 16.1 per game. In the Cardinals' last 11 games though, that number has jumped to 17.7. CUA has established its season high of 22 on two occasions during that time (vs. USMMA, at Susquehanna).
CUA has seven players averaging at least 5.0 points in the Cardinals' 19 wins, led by Woerner (12.3) and Katarina Owunna (10.5). In the five losses however, only five players are averaging at least 5.0 points and just one is scoring in double figures (Woerner, 15.4).
The Cardinals are second in the Landmark Conference, averaging 11.5 steals per game. CUA has totaled double-digit steals in 17 games, with a high of 21 at Stevenson. Jenny McGann leads CUA in steals, averaging 2.2 per contest.
It's been a rough stretch for Goucher, which has not won since January 17, a span of eight games. The Gophers have lost three of those games by single digits, including a one-point loss in overtime to Merchant Marine Academy on January 21. Four of Goucher's five wins this season have come at home, including its lone Landmark Conference victory.
Sharnell Huff is the lone Gopher averaging double figures (11.2), while Kiara Doughty is the team leader in rebounds at 7.4 per game. CUA has won the last three meetings between the schools, with Goucher's last victory coming on February 20, 2010.
