Balanced effort leads CUA to third straight win

MARYMOUNT, Va. – CUA placed four players in double figures, led by Jill Woerner with 14 points, and the Cardinals won their third straight game with a 74-60 victory over Marymount on Tuesday evening.  Kelli Josephsen scored 12 points for CUA, and Emily Grabiak and Liz Briones added 10 each.

Grabiak's jumper a little over five minutes into this one gave CUA a 10-3 lead, and after Rachel Ferri got inside for a basket at the 11:34 mark, the Cardinals were in front 17-10.

Five straight points by the Saints made it a 17-15 game, but Katarina Owunna hit a jumper and Josephsen tipped in a miss to give the Cardinals a six-point advantage.

Woerner's jumper with 2:01 to play gave CUA a 31-23 lead, and her layup with 37 ticks to go sent the Cardinals into halftime leading 36-25.

The Cardinals ripped off the first eight points of the second half to up their lead to 44-25, but the Saints answered with seven straight to pull within 44-32.

Woerner's basket at the 8:31 mark put CUA on top by a 56-40 count, and that ignited a 12-0 run to give the Cardinals a comfortable 66-40 advantage with under five minutes to play.

Marymount was unable to get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way, and that did not happen until the final 15 seconds.

Led by Briones' 10 points, CUA outscored Marymount 35-13 in bench points, and the Cardinals also held a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers.  CUA forced the Saints into 22 turnovers as well as a 3 of 13 showing from 3-point range.

Josephsen pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for CUA, and Owunna led the way with three assists and three blocks. 

Marymount received a game-high 31 points from Katelyn Fischer, which came on 11 of 16 shooting, including 3 of 5 from downtown.  Julie Tomesheski finished with six rebounds and Fischer led the way in assists with five.

CUA is off for the rest of the week before returning to action on Tuesday, November 29 when the Cardinals welcome St. Mary's to the DuFour Center.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
