CUA earns second straight win at Moravian
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – CUA moved to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference with a 70-62 victory at Moravian on Friday evening. The Cardinals have now won two straight in Johnston Hall after never winning there before. Emily Grabiak was a perfect five of five from 3-point range and led CUA with 18 points.
CUA shot just 28% in the opening 20 minutes, but the Cardinals took a 29-26 lead into halftime. Liz Briones' jumper with 1:59 remaining in the half wound up being the final points before intermission.
A Grabiak 3-pointer and Jill Woerner jumper early in the second pushed the Cardinals lead to six, but Moravian charged back and pulled even on Katie O'Rourke's free throw at the 17:36 mark.
Three straight shots from downtown by the Cardinals gave them a seven-point cushion with 14:36 to play, but the Greyhounds responded with an 8-2 run to get within one.
CUA led 52-50 with just under 11 minutes remaining before unleashing an 8-0 run that put the Cardinals in front by ten.
The Greyhounds were able to cut it to a four-point spread on Hilary Murray's free throws at the 4:28 mark, but back-to-back baskets by Woerner and Grabiak pushed the CUA lead back to eight.
Alexandra Blair's layup with 1:08 to play brought Moravian to within four, but CUA sank four free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
Along with Grabiak, Holly Janicki (15) and Kelli Josephsen (10) finished in double figures. Claire McEvily and Grabiak shared the team lead in rebounds with eight apiece, and Karlyn Dixon handed out a team-high four assists.
O'Rourke finished with 18 points for Moravian, while Blair scored 14 and Alexis Wright added 12. Blair ripped down 14 boards to complete the double-double and Murray notched seven helpers.
CUA fell behind 5-0 in the first half before Josephsen splashed a 3-pointer at the 16:51 mark.
Grabiak's trifecta at the 14:57 mark gave CUA its first lead of the night and after Janicki followed with a three of her own, the Cardinals were on top by five.
Wright got inside for a basket at the 9:19 mark for Moravian to tie the score at 18, and that was followed by four more Greyhound points to make it 22-18.
Another Janicki three gave the lead back to CUA, 23-22, and after Briones scored inside the paint the Cardinals had a 27-24 lead.
CUA is back in action on Saturday when the Cardinals head to Scranton, Pa. to face the Royals. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
