CUA headed to Ohio for NCAA Tournament, will face Mules

WASHINGTON – CUA will head to Ohio for its first NCAA Tournament, the Cardinals learned on Monday.  CUA will face Muhlenberg College on Friday, March 2 at 5 p.m. on the campus of the University of Mount Union, located in Alliance, Ohio.

CUA won its first-ever conference championship on February 25 when the Cardinals defeated No. 10 Juniata 79-69 in the Landmark Conference title game.  The win was CUA's school record 22nd and sends the Cardinals into their first NCAA Tournament.

Jill Woerner (23 points) and Katarina Owunna (22 points, 12 rebounds) led CUA in scoring in the game vs. Juniata, with Owunna's effort earning her the Landmark Conference Player of the Week award.

The Cardinals have played some of their best basketball away from home this season, compiling an 11-2 road record and a 1-0 mark on neutral floors. 

Along with CUA and Muhlenberg, the host Mount Union Purple Raiders will take on La Roche with the two winners meeting on Saturday, March 3.  Following the CUA - Muhlenberg game on Friday, Mount Union and La Roche will play at 7.

Muhlenberg earned an automatic bid to the tournament after defeating Johns Hopkins 74-53 in the Centennial Conference championship.  The Mules enter the tournament with a record of 22-5, which includes a 15-5 mark in their conference.  Alexandra Chili (17.4) and Alita Zabrecky (15.0) lead the team in scoring.

Mount Union is 26-1 on the season, having won 21 games in a row.  The Purple Raiders have not lost since December 3 and they defeated Ohio Northern 77-60 to earn the OAC automatic bid. 

La Roche enters the tournament with a record of 22-5, which includes a 17-1 record in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.  The Lady Redhawks beat Medaille College 55-49 to win their conference championship.
