CUA closes out first half of league play with two road games

WASHINGTON - CUA wraps up the first half of Landmark Conference play this weekend, beginning on Friday with a trip to New York to face Merchant Marine Academy.  The Cardinals will then take on Drew on Saturday.  CUA split its two league games last week, downing Susquehanna, before falling to No. 15 Juniata.

The Cardinals enter the weekend with a 3-2 record in the conference, which ties them with Moravian and places them two games in front of Drew, Goucher, Merchant Marine and Susquehanna.

CUA's defense continues to be stingy, ranking 25th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (32.3%).  CUA has held nine opponents below 32% shooting, and seven opponents below 50 points.

In the Cardinals' 11 wins this season, they have outrebounded opponents by an average of 16.2, however, in their four losses, the Cards have been outrebounded by an average of 6.8.

The Cardinals are second in the Landmark Conference and 47th in the nation in steals, averaging 12.33 per game.  CUA has totaled double-digit steals in 12 games, with a high of 21 at Stevenson.  Jill Woerner leads the Cardinals in steals, averaging 2.5 per contest.

Kelli Josephsen is CUA's second leading scorer in road games, averaging 10.7 points on 53% shooting, to go along with 7.3 rebounds.  Those numbers take a dip at home, though, where she is shooting only 34% and averaging 7 points and 6.4 boards.

Merchant Marine Academy enters the weekend with an overall record of 4-9, including a 1-4 mark against Landmark Conference foes.  The Mariners dropped two contests last weekend, to Moravian and Scranton, but bounced back with a convincing 72-35 victory over Medgar Evans on Monday.

Tamara Kaileh leads USMMA in scoring at 12.2 points per game, while Roshenda Josephs is the team leader in rebounding at 5.7.  CUA swept both meetings from Merchant Marine Academy last season and has not lost to the Mariners since February 13, 2010.

After downing Merchant Marine Academy in its conference opener in December, Drew has since dropped four straight Landmark games, including a pair to Scranton and Moravian last weekend.  The Rangers did defeat Utica on Monday 62-60, to earn their fifth win of the season.

Danielle Barber (14.0) and Victoria Ault (10.4) lead Drew in scoring, with Ault the team's leading rebounder (6.0).  The Cardinals took both games from Drew a season ago, and have not lost to the Rangers since February of 2010.
