Cardinals run win streak to six after downing Lady Shock
WASHINGTON – Behind a season-high 22 points from Jill Woerner, CUA ran its win streak to six with a 73-55 victory over Washington Adventist on Wednesday inside the DuFour Center. The Cardinals held the Lady Shock to 29% shooting from the field and outrebounded them 57-44 to improve to 6-1.
CUA came out of the gate quickly, jumping out to leads of 9-0 and 11-2 in the first two minutes.
After Washington Adventist pulled to within 11-6, the Cardinals responded with a 7-0 run to open up an 18-6 advantage with 13:48 to play before halftime.
The lead reached 12 after Kelli Josephsen's jumper at the 11-minute mark, but the Lady Shock were able to keep it close, pulling to within six following a Kristina Murphy basket four minutes later.
A Margo Douglas layup with 4:36 to go before halftime brought the Lady Shock to within 27-20, but CUA scored six straight to open up a 33-20 advantage.
The Cardinals scored the final four points of the half and took a 37-24 lead into the locker room.
CUA opened the second half on a 12-5 run to go in front 49-29, which at the time was the Cardinals largest lead of the game.
Later, CUA scored eight consecutive points and found itself ahead 61-34 with 9:39 to play.
The lead reached 31 on Josephsen's jumper at the 7:36 mark, which was the biggest it got all evening.
A Jenny McGann fastbreak layup with 5:31 to play put CUA in front 70-42, while Morgan Huppenthal's bucket with 2:36 remaining made it a 72-48 game.
Woerner sank 8 of 15 shots en route to her game-high 22 points. She also pulled down five rebounds and recorded three steals. Katarina Owunna finished with 12 points and seven boards, while Josephsen ripped down a team-high nine rebounds and scored eight points.
CUA dominated the interior, outscoring the Lady Shock 44-16 inside the paint.
Douglas led the visitors with 16 points, while Quianna Tiggle added 10. The Lady Shock handed out 13 assists on 18 field goals, but did turn the ball over 24 times.
The Cardinals now hit the road for their next two games, beginning on Monday, December 12 when CUA takes on Wesley. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
