Cardinals open Landmark Conference play with 66-49 win at Drew
MADISON, N.J. – CUA opened its Landmark Conference
schedule with a 66-49 victory over Drew on Saturday
afternoon. The Cardinals led by 11 at halftime and by as many
as 18 in the second half to earn their sixth straight win.
Katarina Owunna notched a double-double with 14 points and 10
boards, while Jill Woerner netted a team-high 16 points.
After opening up a 12-point lead in the second half, CUA saw Drew slowly chip away and pull to within two with 13:04 remaining when Breana Wilson hit a 3-pointer.
Unfazed, the Cardinals reeled off nine straight to open up an 11-point advantage with 8:18 to play.
A 3-pointer by Kristen Walheim with 4:28 remaining gave the Cardinals a 14-point lead, and after Owunna got inside for a layup one minute later, the lead was up to 16 and CUA was on its way to conference win number-one.
CUA dominated down low, outscoring the Rangers 32-12 in the paint and owning a 52-42 advantage on the backboards. Emily Grabiak grabbed nine rebounds for the Cards and Kelli Josephsen finished with eight.
The Cardinals continue to do a good job of forcing turnovers, as Drew committed 27, which led to 22 points for CUA.
Whitney Mackay led the home team with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Jennifer Mateo scored 11.
Drew scored the game’s first two points, but CUA scored the next six and never trailed for the remainder of the day.
Walheim’s layup with 4:56 to play in the opening 20 minutes gave CUA its largest lead of the day up to that point at seven, and a Woerner basket two minutes later pushed it to a nine-point advantage.
Baskets by Owunna and Grabiak in the final minute sent the Cards into halftime with a 27-16 lead.
CUA is now off for two weeks before returning to action on Saturday, December 15 when the Cardinals travel to face Washington College. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
