Woerner drops career-high 29 points to lift No. 21 CUA past Eureka
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – No. 21 CUA moved to 8-0 with an 83-77 defeat of Eureka (Ill.) on Wednesday morning. Senior Jill Woerner exploded for a career-high 29 points, which came on 12 of 22 shooting, and she also pulled down seven rebounds. Emily Grabiak with 14 points and Katarina Owunna with 13 points joined Woerner in double figures.
CUA led the Red Devils 46-36 at the half and used a pair of 3-pointers by Grabiak in the final two minutes of the second half to hold on for win number-eight.
Owunna led the Cards with nine boards, while Grabiak was the team leader in assists with six and Kelli Josephsen added five.
CUA finished with 11 steals, led by Grabiak with four, and Owunna was the leader with two blocked shots.
Eureka received a game-high 35 points from Caty Eeten, which came on 10 of 18 shooting from the field and a 13 of 13 showing at the free throw line. The Red Devils did commit 20 turnovers however, and CUA finished with a 36-33 advantage on the backboards.
CUA closes out its time in the Caribbean on Thursday when the Cardinals take on Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
