No. 13/17 CUA hosts Eagles in midweek showdown on Wednesday

WASHINGTON - No. 13/17 CUA returns home and steps back into conference action Wednesday evening when the Cardinals welcome Juniata to the DuFour Center.  CUA picked up an impressive road win on Monday evening, downing No. 18/19 York 60-52 in Pennsylvania.  Emily Grabiak led the Cards with 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting, while Karlyn Dixon came off the bench to provide a spark with seven points, two assists, two rebounds, a block and a steal.

In the last three games, CUA’s bench has outscored its counterparts by a combined total of 55-18, an average of 18.3 points per game.  In Monday’s win at York, Karlyn Dixon came off the bench to contribute a season-high seven points on 3 of 5 shooting in 20 minutes.

CUA boasts one of the top defenses in the country, ranking 6th in field goal percentage defense (30.2), 15th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (22.6), 28th in scoring margin (+16.6), and 32nd in scoring defense (50.0).  The Cardinals have held eight teams below 30-percent shooting this season, with a low of 21.2 against Bridgewater.

CUA has recorded double-digit steals in every game this season, but two.  The Cardinals rank second in the Landmark Conference with 12.0 steals per game, topping out with 18 vs. Bridgewater.  Individually, Jill Woerner (2.9) and Emily Grabiak (2.6) rank in the top-10 in the conference.

Since the start of the 2010-11 season, CUA is 54-16 overall and 22-8 within the Landmark Conference. Among Landmark teams, only Juniata has more overall wins during that time (60).

Juniata began the season with four straight wins, before falling to conference foe Moravian in the Landmark opener.  The Eagles dropped two straight games in the middle of December, but have since rebounded and enter Wednesday riding a four-game winning streak.  Juniata picked up a hard-fought win in overtime against Scranton this past weekend with the Eagles shooting an impressive 90.5-percent at the free throw line (19-21).  Kate McDonald (13.2) and Jordan Speck (12.3) lead the team in scoring, and McDonald is the team leader in rebounds (10.0).
