No. 18/19 Cardinals bounce back from first loss with 75-49 win

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The No. 18/19 Cardinals (15-1, 4-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season in a big way on Wednesday, racing past Susquehanna 75-49.  CUA held the Crusaders (6-10, 1-4) to 29.6 percent shooting and forced 19 turnovers, while Jill Woerner (14) and Katarina Owunna (12) finished in double figures to lead the way offensively.

CUA scored the game's first seven points, capped by Woerner's layup at the 17:34 mark.

Two minutes later, Susquehanna pulled to within four on Mariah Monahan's jumper, but the two teams then went cold, combining for 3:25 of scoreless basketball.

Monahan broke the scoreless streak with another basket to make it a two-point spread, but Woerner sank a 3-pointer down the other end to push the lead up to five.

The lead hit nine on another Woerner 3-pointer, this one coming with 6:32 on the clock, but Gina Palazzi answered for Susquehanna to make it 25-18.

The Crusaders pulled even closer, getting to within four with 2:41 remaining, but CUA scored six straight and led by 10 in the final minute.

A Jackie Clarke basket with 25 seconds remaining sent the teams into halftime with the Cardinals ahead by eight.

The Cardinals came out after the break and ripped off an 11-0 run, capped by Owunna's free throw with 14:51 to play, which gave CUA a 19-point bulge.

Back-to-back baskets by Mary Hagaman with less than 10 minutes remaining pushed the lead to 23, and Liz Briones' jumper two minutes later made it a 24-point spread.

With under three minutes to play, freshman Jayni Webster drilled a 3-pointer to match CUA's largest lead up to that point at 27, and Briones followed with a layup to increase the lead to 29.

Patrice Ermilio hit a jumper of her own with 1:49 on the clock, as CUA equaled its largest lead of the night at 29.

After struggling with its 3-point shooting of late, CUA did a nice job from beyond the arc, sinking 6 of 13 shots, good for 46.2 percent.  The Cardinals also won the rebound battle 48-34, led by Owunna's nine.

Shannon Grunwald led the home team with 11 points, and Monahan finished with 10.

No. 18/19 CUA is back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals host Scranton at 4 p.m. inside the DuFour Center.  All of the action will be shown live on cuacardinals.com.
