Woerner named a 2013 Capital One Academic All-American

WASHINGTON – Senior Jill Woerner has been named a 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-American, it was announced on Tuesday. A native of Providence, R.I., Woerner was named to the Third Team and is one of only 15 Division III women's basketball student-athletes in the country to receive this honor.

An Academic All-District selection each of the last two seasons, Woerner is a biomedical engineering major, who carries a 3.5 grade-point average. She is highly involved in a number of activities off the court, including Society of Women Engineers and Phi Eta Sigma.

Woerner is also a multi-year member of the Dean's List and Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll and she is part of the CUA Honors Program.

In addition to her academic achievements, Woerner has taken part in several community service initiatives, including Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 8K Run for Health, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Run, Race for the Cure, Play for Kay Day and Cheesecake Factory's Feed the Homeless Peanut Butter Drive.

On the hardwood, the 5-11 guard is a multi-year All-Region and All-Conference selection, and was named the 2010 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year. Woerner finished the regular season leading the Landmark Conference in scoring at 17 points per game and she is currently third in school history with 1,488 career points.

Woerner has scored in double figures 24 times this season, including a career-high 29 points in a win over Eureka. She ranks in the top 10 of the Landmark Conference in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, steals, blocks, and minutes.

Woerner and the No. 10 Cardinals have won a school-record 24 games this season, including a school-record 13 within the Landmark Conference.

CUA returns to action on Wednesday evening when the top-seeded Cards welcome fourth-seeded Juniata to the DuFour Center for a conference tournament semifinal. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
