Balanced scoring, tight defense lead CUA to 74-49 win over RMC

ASHLAND, Va. – The Cardinals got their season off to a strong start on Friday evening, racing past Randolph-Macon 74-49.  CUA scored the game's first 10 points en route to a 38-25 halftime lead, and the defense forced the Yellow Jackets into 28% shooting for the game.  Four Cardinals reached double figures, led by Katarina Owunna with 21 points.

Owunna and Jill Woerner combined for the game's first 10 points, with Woerner netting six of them. 

Randolph-Macon was able to slice the lead in half momentarily, but CUA responded with an 8-0 run to go in front 20-7 with 9:06 to play before halftime.

A Kelli Josephsen jumper at the 5:37 mark gave CUA its largest lead up to that point at 14, while Owunna's layup three minutes later, made it a 15-point spread.

A Nicole Freeman layup in the final seconds of the half for RMC sent the teams into intermission with CUA ahead by 13.

A Sarah Parsons layup with 18:06 to play brought the Yellow Jackets to within nine, but CUA scored the next six to go in front by 15.

The lead reached 19 on Jenny McGann's layup with 8:50 remaining, and another McGann layup, this one coming with 6:30 to play, gave the Cards their first 20-point bulge of the night.

Freshman Josephine Migash got inside for a layup with 3:45 to play as the lead reached 24 and Carolyn Hildreth's layup with 33 seconds on the clock set the final margin at 25.

Joining Owunna in double figures for CUA were Woerner with 14, McGann with 13 and Josephsen with 10.  Woerner, Owunna and Josephsen all grabbed eight rebounds, while Emily Grabiak handed out six assists.

CUA won the rebound battle 53-32, and the Cardinals forced 20 Yellow Jacket turnovers. 

Hanna Livermon led the home team with 13 points, while Freeman added 12 tallies.

The Cardinals close out their weekend on Saturday afternoon when they face a tough Virginia Wesleyan squad in Ashland.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
