WASHINGTON – The Catholic University women's basketball team is predicted to finish fourth this season, based on the Landmark Conference coaches' preseason poll.
The Cardinals return just seven players from last year's squad that won its second consecutive Landmark Conference championship and won the program's first ever NCAA Tournament game. CUA will have a youthful look this year with the addition of 12 freshman to the roster.
The lone starter returning for the red and black is senior captain Emily Grabiak, a First Team All-Conference player in 2013 and a Second Team selection in 2012. As a junior, Grabiak was ranked No. 2 nationally with a 2.71 assist/turnover ratio and was No. 11 in assists per game with 5.5. The Cardinals will have to find a way to replace the 48.0 points per game lost from the graduation of All-American and Landmark Player of the Year Jill Woerner, First Team All-Landmark Kat Owunna, and starters Jenny McGann and Kelli Josephsen.
Moravian was predicted to finish first this season, followed by Scranton, Juniata, and then CUA in the top half of the conference.
The Cardinals officially tipoff the 2013-14 season in Allentown, Pa. at the Scotty Wood Tournament at Muhlenberg College. Catholic will face Misericordia in its opening game on Friday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m., then face either Muhlenberg or Rowan the following day.
