WASHINGTON – Catholic freshman Melissa Errico recorded her first double-double with career-highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Cardinals to a home and conference opening 81-72 win over the Drew Rangers on Saturday in the DuFour Center.
Collectively, CUA finished the night 30-75 from the field, 17-25 from the free throw line and 4-17 from three-point range.
Catholic advances to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark Conference, as Drew drops to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
CUA and DU remained scoreless for the first three minutes of action. Brigid Gannon dropped a mid-range jumper for the Cardinals to snap the numberless run.
Despite their lead, Catholic suffered a three-minute draught from the field until Errico scored at the 15:05 mark.
Each time the Cardinals took a substantial lead, the Rangers fought back to tie the contest. Both teams fought through four ties before CUA reached a seven-point 38-31 halftime score.
The Cardinals continued to prosper from their first lead, reaching a contest-high 14-point margin lead.
Drew managed to chisel away at the lead and come within nine points, nonetheless CUA remained steadfast and secured the 81-72 home court victory.
Catholic returns to non-conference action on Saturday, Dec. 14 to host Washington College at 5 p.m. at the DuFour Center on the Franny Murray Court.
