No. 1 Cardinals Down No. 2 McDaniel 75-63 for First-Ever ECAC Title
WASHINGTON – In her final game as a Cardinal, ECAC Division III Women's Basketball South MVP Emily Grabiak recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds to led Catholic to a 75-63 victory over the Green Terror of McDaniel for the ECAC Title.
Jayni Webster provided an outstanding three-point performance, going 3-of-4 from behind the arc to end her sophomore season with 15 points in the win. Josephine Migash also added 15 points, as Michelle Desantis netted 11 points and Melissa Errico distributed five assists.
The first 14 minutes of action consisted of nine lead changes and four ties.
On a baseline three-pointer by McDaniel's Emilee Bosley, the Green Terror ignited the three-point shootout at the 13:10 mark. For the next six minutes, CUA and McDaniel with three-for-three, until the Green Terror's three-point shooting could not keep up with Jayni Webster's three consecutive made baskets.
Webster broke through the lead changing bout with a fast break layup at the 6:07 mark, Michelle Desantis followed Webster's previous game plan and scored another fast break layup for a 10-point 34-24 lead.
Webster's shooting paced the Cardinals to their largest lead of the half with a 16-point margin lead for a score of 40-24 at the 2:20 mark.
McDaniel's Lindsey Nichols revived the behind the arc shooting effort with two consecutive threes to bring the deficit to 10 points for a halftime score of 42-32.
By the half, Webster led the Cardinal effort with 12 points on a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc and a 4-of-6 mark from the field. Collectively, CUA shot a season-high first half 83 percent from the long range (5-6).
Opposite the first half, CUA dominated contest for over 13 minutes of action. Reaching a half-high 14-point lead at the 10:11 mark.
By the final media timeout of the second half, McDaniel snapped the double-figure deficit for a score of 63-58.
The Green Terror continued to chisel away at the lead, coming within six by the 1:15 mark. Despite the full court pressure defense, Catholic made it down the court for Grabiak to score a phenomenal jumper and follow up with a pair from the charity stripe to regain a double-figure lead.
CUA ends the season with on overall record of 22-6.
