Kings Point, N.Y. – The Catholic University of America women's basketball team captured their seventh Landmark Conference victory on Saturday, defeating the United States Merchant Marine Academy 71-34 to improve to 13-5 on the year (7-2 conference).
Jayni Webster (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Country Day Sacred Heart) led the squad with 12 points, Michelle DeSantis (Trumbull, Conn. / Lauralton Hall) added 11 points to the victory, while Mackenzie Gardner (Ramsey, N.J. / Immaculate Heart Academy) pulled down a season-best six rebounds and DeSantis distributed five assists.
The Cardinals took the lead within the first three minutes of play and never looked back, reaching a 35-17 lead by the half and cruising to a 71-34 win after the intermission.
Tichina Carmon recorded a double-double for USMMA with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Statistically, Catholic shot 63 percent from the charity stripe (10 of 16), 39 percent from the field (27 of 70) and 44 percent from behind the arc (7 of 16). USMMA finished at 57 percent from the free-throw line (8 of 14), 23 percent from the field (13 of 56) and zero percent from three-point range (0 of 14).
