WASHINGTON – Catholic University sophomore Michelle DeSantis and junior Kristen Walheim led the offensive effort with 17 points and 16 points, respectively, in the Cardinals 66-42 win over the Goucher College Gophers in a mid-week league matchup.
With the win, CUA improves to 16-7 on the year and 10-4 in the Landmark Conference, while Goucher declines to 4-17 and 0-13 in the conference.
DeSantis tallied a game-high 17 points on a 5 of 6 finish from the charity stripe, 2 of 3 output from behind the arc and a 5 of 7 effort from the field, while Walheim was equally successful with a 6 of 8 output from the free-throw line and a 2 of 3 finish from three-point range. Bridget Power collected eight rebounds and circulated four assists to top off the Cardinals' team-high finishes.
While Catholic successfully captured the lead at the 12:45 mark of the first half, the Gophers remained on the Cardinals' heels, reaching a one-point margin deficit with 9:10 remaining. But, a series of turnovers by GC from forcing the ball into the paint allowed CUA to pace to an 11-2 lead for a score of 24-14.
By the intermission, the Cardinals were ahead by 15 points with a score of 33-18.
Despite Goucher's improvement from the field, Catholic's demonstrative improvement from the field and the free-throw line kept CUA ahead by double figures and an eventual 66-42 victory.
Statistically, CUA shot 70 percent from the charity stripe (19 of 27), 39 percent from the field (20 of 52) and 50 percent from the field (7 of 14), while GC finished at 50 percent from the charity stripe (8 of 16) and 32 percent from the field (32 percent).
Catholic returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 to welcome the Juniata Eagles with a 7 p.m. start. CUA fell to the Eagles earlier this season with 77-76 loss at Juniata on Wednesday, Jan. 21 in Huntingdon, Pa.
