Ashland, Va. – The Catholic University of America women's basketball team topped Ferrum College, 58-49, on the second day of the Randolph-Macon Tipoff Tournament. Both the Lady Cardinals and Ferrum Panthers are now 1-1 in the 2015 season.
The Cards outscored the Panthers in the first three periods of the contest. Catholic took a 37-20 lead after the first half, utilizing five reserves from the bench.
Catholic tallied fifteen more in the third period to hold a 19 point lead heading into the fourth. Ferrum attempted a comeback but the Catholic lead was enough to earn the Lady Cards their first victory of the season.
Senior Jayni Webster tallied a team high 12 points for the Lady Cards, sinking five field goals and two three-point shots while also pulling down five rebounds and dishing out two helpers. Juniors Melissa Errico and Bernadette Launi each put up eight points for Catholic while their classmate Michelle DeSantis scored seven. Launi shot 100% from behind the free throw line sinking, 4-of-4.
Errico led the Catholic defense with 7 total rebounds in the contest and was named to the All-Tournament team along with DeSantis.
The Lady Cardinals will continue their season on the road in the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament at John Hopkins University in Saturday, November 21. No. 16 Catholic will face (RV) Trinity (Texas) at 3 p.m., to open the tournament weekend.
