Kings Point, N.Y. - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team took down Landmark Conference opponent, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 72-53, during their Saturday afternoon contest.
The Cards took an early lead after the first period, outshooting the Mariners 15-8. Catholic advanced its lead in the second ten minutes heading into the half time break with 35-27 score.
CUA shot 73% (11-15) from behind the charity strip in the first half as junior Michelle DeSantis went 3-of-3 from the field. DeSantis tallied 10 points in the first half while senior Jayni Webster posted nine.
Catholic continued its run, scoring 27 points in the third period to USMMA's 12, and scored 10 points in the fourth quarter for the 72-53 victory.
DeSantis notched a team-high 16 points and dished out five assists while Webster scored 13 total points. Junior Melissa Errico pulled down eight rebounds while putting up 10 points.
The Cardinals will continue Landmark play when they travel to Elizabethtown on Tuesday, Jan. 5, to take on the Blue Jays a 7 p.m.
