WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team earned its third Landmark Conference win of the season after downing Elizabethtown College 63-60 on Tuesday night.
The win advances the Cardinals to 8-5 overall in the 2015-16 season and 3-1 in the conference while the Blue Jays drop to 6-4 overall, 2-2 in league play.
Junior classmates Melissa Errico and Bridget Power opened the Tuesday evening contest with four points a piece in the first period as Catholic outshot E-Town, 17-10. The Lady Cards put up 20 additional points in the second ten minutes of play to advance their lead to 37-24 before the halftime intermission.
Following the break, the Blue Jays closed the gap by sinking 19 points in the third period, giving the Cardinals just a three-point lead (46-43) heading into the final 10 minutes.
The conference opponents battled back and forth as time continued to expire. With 1:35 to play, the Blue Jays tied the game at 59. Senior Jayni Webster tallied a three-point basket with 24 seconds remaining and followed with a free throw to clinch the Catholic victory (63-60).
Junior Michelle DeSantis tallied a team-high 12 points along with three assists. Additionally, Errico and Power each dished out three helpers while senior Kristen Walheim and Errico each pulled down six rebounds.
The Cardinals continue their 2015-16 campaign when they host Landmark opponent Goucher on Thursday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
