WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team advanced its Landmark Conference record to 4-1 after topping Goucher, 78-60, on Thursday evening. The win brings CUA to 9-5 overall while Goucher falls to 5-8 on the season and 0-4 in the league.
Four Lady Cardinals led the Catholic offense with over 10 points apiece. Junior Melissa Errico sunk a team-high 16 points while senior Jayni Webster tallied 15 and junior Bridget Power scored 14. Sophomore Payton Smith came off the bench and notched 13 points.
Errico opened the game with a layup in the first minute, followed by a field goal from senior Kristen Walheim. After a bucket from the Gophers, the Lady Cardinals went on an eight-point run and scored an additional 10 points for a 22-13 lead before the end of the first period.
The Gophers took control of the momentum, tying the contest at 28 with 2:20 remaining in the first half. Four free throws from Errico and one from Power along with a 3-pointer from Webster brought the Lady Cards to a 36-28 advantage at the break.
CUA broke away in the third period, outshooting Goucher 20-14, and continued its run in the fourth, bringing the score to 78-60 at the final buzzer.
Power pulled down eight defensive rebounds while Webster grabbed three steals and Errico blocked two Goucher shots.
The Lady Cards will continue league play when the host Drew University on Saturday, Jan. 9, at 4 p.m.
