Madison, N.J. - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team topped Landmark opponent, Drew University in a close, 69-64, victory Saturday afternoon.
Catholic senior Kristen Walheim hit a 3-point shot in the first 15 seconds of the game to start the Lady Cardinal scoring. Three additional starters, senior Jayni Webster, junior Michelle DeSantis, and sophomore Payton Smith, along with bench player, sophomore Samantha Cowan sunk buckets in the first period for 16 total points. Despite Catholic's points in the first period the Lady Cards found themselves trailing the Rangers just, 17-16, after the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter put the Lady Cards on top as they outshot the Rangers, 18-12, brining the scoreboard to 34-29 going into the halftime break.
CUA junior Bridget Power entered the game with Cowan during the third period, each sinking a jumper. Webster went 4-for-4 from the charity strip, during the 10 minutes span, to help lift the Catholic lead to 12 points (49-37) by the end of the period.
With a clear lead going into the final 10 minutes, the game was not over for the Lady Cardinals. The Rangers hit the hardwood, outscoring the Cards 27-20 in the final period. Defensive efforts from junior Melissa Errico and Wahleim allowed the Cards to maintain their lead thought the final buzzer.
Errico had a team-high five assists along with seven steals thoughout the contest, including two in the final period. Webster tallied 18 points for the Cards while Walheim and DeSantis each pulled down seven rebounds.
