WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team topped Landmark Conference opponent Goucher College, 64-51, on the road Wednesday evening. The win advances the Cardinals' record to 14-8 overall and 9-4 in the conference, while the Gophers drop to 8-14 and 3-10.
Four Lady Cardinals tallied double-digit points during the midweek contest. Senior Josephine Migash hit a team-high 14 points, while classmate Jayni Webster put up 10. Additionally, junior Michelle DeSantis scored 13 points as classmate Melissa Errico hit 11.
Catholic sophomore Payton Smith hit the first CUA shot of the contest putting up a 3-pointer in the opening minute. With the basket, the Lady Cards earned a lead they would not relinquish for the following 39 minutes.
Down just one (15-14) after the first period, Goucher looked to pull ahead in the second ten minutes. The Gophers went shot for shot with the Lady Cards until Migash sunk two free throws and a layup to lift CUA ahead 25-20. A free throw from Smith followed by a bucket from Migash rounded out the first half scoring for CUA, giving the Cards a 28-24 lead at the halftime break.
Catholic maintained its close lead in the third period, outshooting the Gophers just 11-10. Ahead 39-34 going into the final period, the Lady Cards turned up and ran away with the score. With two 3-point shots from Webster and two free throws plus a layup from DeSantis, Catholic hit five unanswered shots within 1:23 minutes. Migash hit the final layup to bring CUA to its, 64-51, victory.
Errico pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while grabbing two steals. DeSantis dished out six assists with four steals as Migash and junior Bridget Power each had four steals of their own.
Catholic will travel to Huntington, Pa., on Wednesday, Feb. 17, to continue Landmark play as they take on Juniata College at 7 p.m.
