WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America women's basketball team left Boston, Mass., as champions on Sunday afternoon as senior guard Michelle DeSantis hit the gamewinner with just 12 seconds left to win the Emmanuel College Tipoff Classic over the host team, 59-58.
In a back-and-forth contest, DeSantis came up clutch as a member of the all-tournament team and hit the clinching basket with just seconds remaining. She finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Tournament MVP Melissa Errico had an impressive streak with 23 points, 13 rebounds, a block and a steal in 35 minutes as the Cards withstood a strong comeback by the Saints and picked up their third-straight victory to start the season.
Catholic held Emmanuel to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and a 20 percent mark from beyond the arc.
Seven different Cardinals scored in the game including six off the bench from rookie guard Mollie Reynolds who finished the contest with five rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block.
Catholic returns to action next Sunday at home versus Coast Guard at 1 p.m.
