Salisbury, Md. - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2016-17 season in a hard-fought showdown against Salisbury University.
Down 39-31 halftime, the Cardinals pushed to comeback in the final period. A three-point shot from senior Michelle DeSantis, with three minutes to play in game, lifted the Cards over the Seagulls, 56-53. Salisbury followed with a good jumper and three-pointer followed by six straight free throws to take the victory, topping the Cards 64-59.
Despite the loss, Catholic senior Bernadette Launi recorded a season-high 16 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. DeSantis posted 19 points, with 4-of-4 free throws, and seven rebounds. Freshman reserve Mollie Reynolds went 5-of-5 from the free throw line, tallied seven total points and dished out four assists.
Salisbury got off to a quick 8-2 start in the first four minutes of the contest and finished the first 10-minute period ahead 24-16. Each team scored 15 points in the second period giving the Seagulls a 39-31 advantage heading into the break.
With a second half surge, Catholic closed in on Salisbury. The Cards tightened the margin in the third period then tied up the game, taking two leads in the fourth before suffering the loss.
With under eight minutes to play the Cards went on a six-point run. Two layups from DeSantis and two free throws from Reynolds brought the battle to 51 points apiece.
A layup from junior Payton Smith gave Catholic its first lead of the game (53-51) before the Seagulls tied it a 53. The Cards regained the advantage when DeSantis hit a three-pointer to go ahead 56-53, but Salisbury captured the victory as time expired.
The Cardinals will remain On the road as they head to Neumann University on Saturday, December 10. Tip-off against the Knights is slated for 3 p.m.
