WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team earned its eighth win of the season after topping Wesley College, 75-55, on Sunday afternoon.
Three Cardinals tallied double-digit points as senior Melissa Errico recorded a team-high 15, sinking 6-of-9 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws. Fellow senior Bernadette Launi totaled 13 points while freshman Mollie Reynolds scored 10.
The Wolverines took a 6-4 lead in the opening two minutes of play. A layup from Errico tied the contest at six apiece and a three-pointer from junior Payton Smith at the 3:03 mark gave the Cards a 9-6 advantage; a lead they would not relinquish throughout the game.
During the first period, Reynolds registered six points and DeSantis scored five to help Catholic to an 11-point lead (28-17) after 10-minutes. Both the Cards and Wolverines recorded 16 points in the second period. Catholic's advantage was enough to keep them ahead, 44-33, at the halftime break.
Catholic increased its lead in the third period as Launi tallied eight points and Errico recorded five to help the Cardinals outscore the Wolverines 18-6.
The Cardinals' largest margin of the afternoon came in the fourth period when senior Bridget Power sank a three-point bucket to lift Catholic to a 28-point (69-41) advantage. The Wolverines rallied to close the gap but Catholic's lead was too great. At the final buzzer, the Cardinals captured the 20-point victory.
The Cardinals will return to the DuFour Center for the annual Jamie Lynn Roberts - Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament on December 29. On day one, they are slated face off against Washington & Jefferson at 3 p.m.
