WASHINGTON - On the opening day of the Jamie Lynn Robert – Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament, The Catholic University of America women's basketball team topped Washington & Jefferson College 76-64. The win advances the 2016-17 Lady Cardinals to 9-1 overall while the Presidents drop to 5-4.
Catholic junior Payton Smith led the Cardinal offense hitting 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for a total of 19 points. Freshman Megan Stafford racked up six steals and seven rebounds during the game while senior Michelle DeSantis dished out seven assists.
Smith opened the contest sinking a 3-point shot in the first 20 seconds. Stafford and senior Melissa Errico each hit a layup giving Catholic and early 7-4 lead. DeSantis put up seven points in the first quarter, making 2-of-2 free throws, a 3-pointer and a jumper helping the Cardinals outscore the Presidents 19-13.
Washington & Jefferson attempted to close the gap starting off the second period with a 3-pointer from senior Danni Medovich. A Catholic layup from rookie Sydney Poindexter followed by a 3-pointer from teammate Mollie Reynolds brought the Cards to an eight-point lead (24-16).
Smith, DeSantis and senior Bridget Power also sunk shots from behind the arc in the second period to keep the Cards in control of the game. With 25 total points in the period, the Presidents tighten the score, but the Cardinals maintained the advantage (41-38) heading into the halftime intermission.
After the break Catholic regained momentum and a layup from Poindexter bought the Cardinals to a 10-point lead (50-40) in the first five minutes of the period. Smith scored six total points in the third period going 4-of-4 from the free throw line and finishing a good layup. The Cards held the Presidents to just nine points, taking a 56-47 lead at the end of the third period.
The Cardinals finished strong in the fourth period as Errico scored six points while DeSantis and senior Bernadette Launi each scored four.
The final buzzer sounded with a Catholic 76-64 lead. The Cardinals punched their ticket to the Jamie Lynn Roberts – Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament Championship Final game. The game is set for 3 p.m., Friday, Dec. 30, verus Fairleigh Dickinson – Florham, who topped the College of St. Benedict 55-47 in the tournaments opening game.
The Jamie Lynn Roberts – Fairfield Inn Holiday Tournament is played in memory of former Catholic women's basketball assistant coach Jamie Roberts.
Jamie Roberts was a valued and impactful leader at The Catholic University of America. She was a three-sport standout at St. Mary's College of Maryland '11 who then became a Catholic women's basketball assistant coach and the athletic communications assistant. Jamie tragically lost her life while biking across the country for cancer during the summer of 2014.
Jamie made it her mission to positively impact the lives and well-being of all whom she came into contact with. Donning her trademark smile, endearing selflessness, and wonderfully magnetic personality Jamie was quick to lend a hand to any, and all, in need. Jamie remains today, and will forever remain, a loyal teammate, trusted mentor, esteemed colleague and treasured friend!
