Smith Garners Athlete of the Week Honors

Towson, Md. - Junior Payton Smith of The Catholic University of America women's basketball team has been selected as the Landmark Conference of the Week, after guiding the Cardinals into the top seed in the conference tournament.

"I am absolutely thrilled for Payton!" said head coach Matt Donohue. "We entered this past week with two huge games against two great programs, and a lot on the line.  With little room for error, Payton came up big in both games and turned in two incredible performances."

Smith averaged 12 points a game over against Elizabethtown and Moravian. On Wednesday, Feb. 15, she scored a team-high 14 points versus Elizabethtown to clinch a home semifinal contest.

During Saturday's showdown against Moravian, Smith hit a corner 3-pointer with 14 seconds left from that broke a 54-all tie and sent the Cards back to the DuFour Center with homecourt advantage throughout. Smith finished the game with 10 points, two 3-pointers and two rebounds.

"Payton been a huge part of our success all season, and has been a bit of an unsung hero for our program so, it has been great to see her growth this year and even more exciting to see her get this recognition!" expressed Donohue.

The Cardinal will host Elizabethtown at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, February 22 for the Landmark Conference Semifinals.
