No. 23 Catholic Falls to No. 19 Scranton in Landmark Final

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America women's basketball team was topped in a nationally-ranked battle for the Landmark Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. The No. 23 Cardinals fell to No. 19 Scranton, 58-42.

The first two quarters were tightly contested as Scranton held just a two-point lead after the first, 12-11, and three-pointers at the break, 24-21. The Royals clamped down defensively from there however as a 12-5 third quarter shifted momentum in their favor and built a lead big enough that Catholic could not overcome.

The Cardinals were strong defensively with 10 steals and four blocks in addition to holding Scranton to just 4-of-12 from 3-point range, but the Royals kept pace by holding an edge on the boards and kept Catholic to just 15-of-53 attempts from the field.

Senior Michelle DeSantis scored 14 points with seven rebounds, four assists, one 3-pointer, one steal and one block in a complete-game effort. Her classmate Melissa Errico also scored in double digits with 10 points and added four boards, a steal and a rejection.

For Scranton, three Royals scored in double-figures with Katie Broderick netting 14 points with four 3-pointers as she took home the MVP award.

The Cardinals will now find out where they fall in the NCAA Tournament as the selection show is set for Monday, February 27, at 2:30 p.m.
