WASHINGTON - Marymount junior guard Candice Brown hit a layup
with five seconds left, then knocked the ball away as time expired
to help the Saints defeat Catholic 63-61 in a CAC women's
basketball game at the Raymond A. DuFour Center. Catholic (10-11,
4-7 CAC) had rallied from a 61-55 deficit to tie the game with 1:10
remaining on a three-pointer by Meg Hagarty, the
junior guard's 1,000th career point. After the teams exchanged
missed three-point attempts, Marymount (17-5, 10-2) got the ball
back with 13 seconds left as freshman forward Katie Jarvis fed
Brown for the winning basket. Brown's deflection kept Catholic from
getting off a 20-footer at the buzzer.
The Cardinals led, 40-35, midway through the second half before
Marymount went on an 11-0 run to take a 46-40 lead. Freshman
forward Jules Baronas scored six of her 12 points during the run.
Catholic was led by sophomore guard Carol
Schnepp, who scored a game-high 26 points despite fouling
out with 4 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the contest. Hagarty,
who finished the game with 1,002 career points, added 17, including
a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.
Marymount, which remained a game behind CAC leader Salisbury
State, was led by Jarvis' 16 points and team-high three steals.
