WASHINGTON - Catholic held off a late charge by Goucher as the Cardinals defeated the Gophers, 61-51, in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at the DuFour Center Saturday afternoon. Senior Carol Schnepp totaled a game-high 16 points while freshman Laura Kaye added eight points, a game-high 14 rebounds, and five assists to help CUA break a two-game skid.
Up just 30-27 at halftime, Catholic (7-8, 3-3 CAC) used a 14-0 run to open the second half capped off by Lindsay DiRomualdo's three-pointer and looked to break the game wide open. The freshman chipped in eight points and three assists.
Freshman Katie Murtha gave the Cardinals their biggest lead of the day at 58-38 with 6:02 to play as she connected on her only trey of the day.
The Gophers (5-9, 1-5 CAC) rallied in the final minutes using two treys from Erin Borsody and one form Kate Guggino to cut the CUA lead to 59-51 with just under a minute in the game but that would be as close as Goucher could get. Borsody led the Gophers with 13 points while Guggino recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.
Junior Kathleen McGlynn contributed nine points and five boards to help CUA hold a 57-42 rebound edge.
Before the game senior Amy Tyluki was honored for becoming the program's all-time assist leader last season. The guard currently has 315 career assists.
Catholic takes on McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. on Monday, January 27th at 7 p.m.
