SCRANTON, Pa. - Sophomore Tara Gemmel scored a game- and career-high 25 points to lead the No. 8 University of Scranton women's basketball team to an 85-62 victory over Catholic at the John J. Long Center on Saturday.
The Lady Royals (4-0), who had five players score in double figures, also got 18 points, five assists and four steals from junior Kate Pierangeli. Senior AnneMarie Russo added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Freshman Anne Maguire hit four 3-pointers to finish with a season-best 14 points for the Cardinals (1-1). Senior Carol Schnepp and rookie Lindsay DiRomualdo scored 13 points each. DiRomualdo added a game-high nine rebounds and four assists.
Gemmel, a 5-foot-9 forward, scored 11 points during a 30-8 run in the second half to extend Scranton's 51-43 lead to 81-51 with 5:26 remaining. She hit 8 of 13 shots overall, including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and 5 of 6 from the line.
Junior Katie Dougherty chipped in 12 points, six boards, four assists and three steals for the Lady Royals, who led 44-34 at halftime. Sophomore Maura Kane came off the bench to grab seven rebounds and score 11 points.
CUA returns to action Monday night by hosting Villa Julie at 6 p.m.
