ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Senior Carol Schnepp scored a season-high 20 points but it wasn't enough as St. Mary's handed Catholic a 71-60 defeat in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
The Seahawks' Samanda Hawkins led all scorers with 23 points while teammate Mary Kate Lenz added 14 for St. Mary's.
A 13-4 run early in the first half gave the Seahawks its biggest lead of the period at 21-13. CUA answered as freshman Anne Maguire connected on her only three-pointer of the night with just over nine minutes in the period to cut the lead back to five. The Cardinals scraped and clawed to get within two at 30-28 right before the half on Jane Maybury's short jumper.
Schnepp's three-pointer at the midway point of the second period gave Catholic it's first lead since early in the first half.
Gloria Schnepp put the Cardinals ahead for the last time as the freshman could only hit on one of two free throws with 5:40 in the game to make it a 54-53 contest. Schnepp finished with six points and seven rebounds.
From there St. Mary's (9-6, 3-2 CAC) went on a 13-2 run and would not relinquish the lead. Second half shooting woes also doomed the Cardinals as Catholic was just 7-of-28 in the stanza and 19-of-59 for the game.
St. Mary's shot 54% (13-of-24) from the floor in the second half en route to a 45% (24-of-53) performance for the evening.
Freshman Laura Kaye chipped in eight points and nine caroms for Catholic (6-8, 2-3 CAC).
