ST. MARY'S CITY, MD. - Freshman Lindsay DiRomualdo hit two free-throws with six seconds remaining as the fifth-ranked Cardinals upset the fourth-ranked Seahawks of St. Mary's, 46-42, in a Capital Athletic Conference Tournament First-Round game Tuesday night.
Leading 22-20 at the half, St. Mary's answered by scoring the first five points of the period. But the Cardinals responded with a run of their own, outscoring the Seahawks, 10-1, over the next five minutes.
The teams would trade leads a few more times in the half before two Carol Schnepp free-throws gave CUA a 40-38 lead with 3:39 to play. The senior finished with a team-high 14 points.
But St. Mary's gave it one last push to get within two at 44-42 with just over a minute in the game but the Seahawks were not able to get the tying basket.
Both teams had trouble finding the shooting touch as the two squads shot a combined 25-of-106 for the game.
Freshman Gloria Schnepp added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench as the Cardinals have advanced to the semifinal round of the CAC Tournament for the second consecutive season.
Catholic will travel to play at top-seeded Salisbury, who were 92-51 winners over Gallaudet, on Thursday in a CAC Tournament Semifinal. Time is TBA.
