CUA Bests Methodist 76-73
Linderoth goes 10-10 from the line
ASHLAND, Va. - Jackie DeBorger's (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) six three's were enough to give the Catholic University women's basketball squad (1-0) its first win of 2006-07 in the team's season opener. CUA downed the Methodist Monarchs (0-1), 76-73, at the Randolph-Macon Tip Off Tournament in Ashland, Va.
Early in the game the Monarchs took the lead, but CUA came roaring back to take over midway through the half with DeBorger leading the way. The senior captain scored 20 points in the first half including all six of her three's in fifteen minutes on the floor. The Cardinal's 38-28 halftime lead was also helped by ten points from sophomore Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) including an eight of eight performance on the charity stripe.
In the second half, CUA managed to get the lead up to as much as 17 at one point, but the Monarchs would not concede the game. A 12-0 run by Methodist midway through the second stanza brought CUA's lead to single digits and with three minutes to go the Monarchs were trailing by just five points.
As Methodist sent Cards to the line trying to avoid a stall, CUA answered with six consecutive made free throws, including four by freshman Justine Gray (Cortdlandt Manor, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic), to seal the victory making the final 76-73.
DeBorger paced the Cardinals with 22 points and Linderoth added 16 as well as seven rebounds. Gray rounded out the top three chipping in 11 points. Ashley Harris was the leading scorer for the Monarchs with 15.
CUA will play on Saturday against Averett at 2:00 p.m., in the second day of the tip off tournament.
