Lions Defeat Cardinals, 73-61
DeBorger scores 24 for CUA
EWING, N.J. - The Catholic University women's basketball team (2-1) went down early to The College of New Jersey Lions (2-1) Tuesday evening. Despite a heroic effort by Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, NY/Holy Trinity) CUA could not make it back from the deficit and dropped the game 73-61 for its first loss of the season.
At 17:46 in the first the Lions took the lead and never looked back. The Cardinals didn't help the situation scoring just two points in seven minutes to make the score 23-12 with 5:23 to play in the first. CUA was able to make up some ground with points in the paint with the score 35-20 at the break.
The Cards shot just 21.2% from the field in the first half with DeBorger as the leading scorer notching three points, both from beyond the arc.
To start the second half the Cards came out fired up and went on a quick 10-0 to bring the team within four 36-32 after two Lion turnovers and some missed shots. That would be as close as the Cardinals would get, however, as TCNJ continued to get bursts putting CUA away.
With Catholic University looking at a 18-point deficit with four minutes to play the Cards didn't give up bringing it within eight but eventually falling 73-61.
DeBorger led all scorers with 24 points and added three rebounds. Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy) and Justine Gray (Cortdlandt Manor, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) both contributed eight points to the effort. Margo Buchalski led the Lions with 15 points. The Cards were outrebounded 51-38 but had just 14 turnovers to the Lions' 17.
CUA will have a few days off before traveling to Scranton on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m., game against the #1 team in the nation.
