Cardinals Lose to Spartans 73-64
CUA ends four-game win streak
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball squad fell 73-64 Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center to the York College Spartans (10-4, 5-1 CAC). The contest CUA's first Capital Athletic Conference test in the new year dropping the Cards to 9-5, 2-2 in conference play. The game also marked the end of a strong run for CUA who hadn't lost a game since December 9.
CUA came out incredibly cold not making a shot until 14:45 when Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) hit a free throw. Unfortunately for CUA the Cards were already looking at a 9-1 deficit. Catholic University battled back in the first half, however, and took the lead with five minutes to go thanks to a three from freshman Shea Macdonald (Chantilly, Va/Chantilly High School) but again York had an answer. The Spartans quickly went on an 8-1 run making the score 34-29 going into halftime.
Linderoth led all scorers in the first with nine points, Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy) and Justine Gray (Cortdlandt Manor, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) each chipped in six. The telling stat of the half was shooting percentage as the Spartans hit 43.3 percent of their shots while the Cardinals made 30.8 percent. Neither squad had a mistake-free half with York have the slight 13-12 edge in turnovers.
Statistically, the Cardinals played a much better game in the second half. CUA outshot York 40 percent to 33 percent and had just four turnovers to the Spartans' 10. However, York pulled down more than double the rebounds CUA did, 31-15, and scored ten second chance points to stay one step ahead. York had widened the gap to double digits by the end of the game and a late CUA run could do nothing to counter. The Cardinals fell by a final of 73-64.
Linderoth led all scorers with 20 and Gray added 11, both notched a team-high six rebounds. The Cards were outrebounded 52-31 for the game but did commit just 16 turnovers to York's 23. Chanel Perez led the Spartans with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
CUA will go on the road on Wednesday with a CAC-matchup against the Salisbury Sea Gulls. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
