Cardinals Fly Above Sea Gulls
Justine Gray has a career-high 18 points
SALISBURY, Md. - The Catholic University women's basketball team got back on track with a 56-51 victory over the Salisbury Sea Gulls (9-6, 4-2 CAC) Wednesday evening in Maryland. The win improved the Cards to 10-5 and 3-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Freshman Justine Gray (Cortdlandt Manor, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) had a career day notching 18 points and three steals for the Cardinals.
After two incredibly close Cardinal victories last season, the Sea Gulls came out with a chip on their shoulder. The first half was back and forth as the teams saw eight lead changes and four ties in twenty minutes. At 7:04 freshman Shea Macdonald (Chantilly, Va/Chantilly High School) hit a three to put CUA by two. This shot sparked a 7-0 Cardinal run but again the Sea Gulls battled back within two making the halftime score 26-24.
Gray put together an almost perfect half going 4-4 from the field and 2-2 at the line for ten points and two rebounds. Macdonald was the second leading scorer with six points as the freshmen duo controlled the first period. Junior reserve Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) played just seven minutes in the first half but managed to collect six rebounds including two offensive.
The second half was much of the same but despite a scoring drought; CUA was able to maintain the lead. Up by seven at 12:48, the Cardinals weren't able to find the bottom of the net until 7:09. Even with the lack of scoring CUA was still ahead thanks to tough defense. As the time ticked down the Sea Gulls were forced to foul and Catholic University came away with the 56-51 win.
Gray led all scorers with 18 points while Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) chipped in 10. Linderoth ended with a team-high nine rebounds facing an imposing Sea Gull team that had two players bring them down in double digits. Jessica Mills led the Sea Gulls with 17 points.
CUA will host a CAC contest on Saturday against Gallaudet at the DuFour Center before heading off for a three-game conference road trip. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
