Linderoth has five blocks in the game
MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Catholic University women's basketball team started off 2007 with a bang Tuesday evening in New Jersey. The Cardinals crushed Montclair State (5-6), 65-38, improving to 7-4 on the season. Four Cards scored in double figures and sophomore forward Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) notched a game-high five blocks in the paint.
The Cardinals went up early as Linderoth hit a jumper from Shannon Mertz (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) at 19:08. CUA would never relinquish the lead despite some close calls in the first half. The Cards shot just 31 percent and were outrebounded 23-18 in the opening stanza. Despite the struggles CUA was ahead 25-18 at the break.
Senior guard Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, NY/Holy Trinity) led the way with nine points coming consecutively from behind the arc. Linderoth contributed eight as well as four blocks and one steal. While Montclair State was effective on the boards, its shooting was not as accurate hitting a dismal 29 percent in the first and committing 12 turnovers.
CUA took over in the second half scoring going on a 12-5 run to go up by 14 just six minutes in. The Red Hawks could never overcome the deficit and the Cards expanded their lead to as much as 29 at one point. With CUA shooting 48 percent in the half, the Cards came out with the 65-38 victory.
DeBorger led all scorers with 18 points with four three's. Linderoth added a complete game including 16 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and four assists. Senior Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy) was hot from long range going 3-4 from three for 13 points and Mertz rounded out the scoring with 10.
CUA will continue its busy week with a game at home against Christopher Newport on Thursday. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
