Balanced Attack Works in Cardinal
Four players score in double digits in close win over Goucher
WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's basketball squad (4-2, 2-0 CAC) used a total team effort to get the 63-55 victory over the Goucher Gophers (1-4, 0-1 CAC) Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center. The Cards had four players score in double digits as many have five or more rebounds to improve to 4-2 for the season and 2-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference.
The Cardinals were up by as much as nine during the first half but could never really pull away. After leading by eight points, the Gophers came back to tie it and even take the lead with 6:04 left in the first half. CUA had four different players score including three's by Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./La Salle Academy). Kristen Linderoth hit two layups and registered two boards as well as a block in the final six minutes.
CUA went into the locker room up 31-24 thanks to Linderoth's nine and Rojas' eight points. The Gophers played the Cards fairly even with 17 rebounds the CUA's 19, but the telling stat was seven Goucher steals resulting in 14 first half turnovers for the Cardinals.
An 8-0 run early in the second half resulted in a tied game but again and again the Cards came back. CUA would go up by seven and then the Gophers would come roaring back bringing the deficit to three. With 3:25 left in the game the Cardinals were only up by two points. But Linderoth hit two big free throws and a layup to give the Cards some breathing room.
With the Gophers forced to foul Rojas went to the line and hit four free throws. Senior Shannon Mertz (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) followed that with a defensive rebound and sank her two foul shots to put the game out of reach for Goucher.
Linderoth led the Cardinals with 15 points and a team-high ten boards. DeBorger chipped in 13 and Rojas as well as Mertz each had 12 to give the Cards a balanced offense. Both teams had trouble protecting the ball with the Gophers and the Cardinals registering 23 turnovers apiece. CUA outrebounded its CAC-foe 37-35. Shadae Swan had a good day for Goucher with 25 points, four steals and 4-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
CUA will go on the road this Monday with a contest against Hood College at 6:00 p.m.
