Cardinals Soar Past Blazers
DeBorger leads all scorers with 16
FREDERICK, Md. - The Catholic University women's basketball squad (5-2) continued its three-game win streak with an emphatic 72-45 victory over the Hood College Blazers (0-5). Seniors Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) and Maria Rojas (Naples, Fla./LaSalle Academy) led the way both giving all-around performances.
The Cards used a 24-1 run spanning seven minutes early in the first half to solidify the lead. During the run DeBorger scored seven points while numerous other Cardinals contributed with layups, free throws and steals.
With five minutes remaining in the half, the Cards were able to keep the lead in the twenties to go into the locker room up 38-16. DeBorger had 14 points in the first half and local-product Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin) added 10 points and as many rebounds in the return to her area. The Cards had 32 rebounds in the first half including 17 offensive and 15 defensive. Senior Shannon Mertz (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Visitation) contributed on the boards with seven.
Foul trouble and substitutions gave the Blazers an advantage in the second half. The team was able to get within 14 points, but CUA held on using scrappy defense to disrupt the Hood offense. The Cardinals put on a balanced attack with Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) scoring six points through her double-team and Rojas contributing seven.
At the final whistle CUA had the 72-45 victory. DeBorger led all scorers with 16 points and Rojas added 13. Robinson and Mertz each had 10 points. Robinson's ten rebounds were a team-high, while Rojas notched seven steals and the same number of assists. Jennifer Willison led the Blazers with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
CUA will just have one day's rest before playing Marymount on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
