DeBorger Scores her 1,000 Point in Cardinal
Jackie DeBorger moves into the CUA 1,000 point club
WASHINGTON - A shot at 19:00 in the second half propelled Jackie DeBorger (Floral Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity) into the Catholic University record books as she scored her 1,000 career point Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center. Unfortunately, DeBorger couldn't produce a victory as the Cardinals (5-4) fell to the Richard Stockton College Ospreys (4-5), 69-63.
A jumper by freshman Justine Gray (Somers, N.Y./John F Kennedy Catholic) started the scoring for the game as CUA took the lead and didn't relinquish it. The Ospreys were able to get in within one wth five minutes to go but DeBorger made two free throws to put CUA up by seven. The Cards played well in the first half with forward Kristen Linderoth (Spring Lake, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) hitting down low for eight points. The Cardinals went into the locker room with a 26-19 lead and DeBorger sitting at 999 points.
In the second half, DeBorger hit her milestone to put the Cards up by nine making it seem as though CUA would break away. Instead, however, turnovers and poor defense gave the Ospreys to come back. After the second tie of the game Stockton went ahead ay 8:25 and never looked back.
At the final buzzer, the damage had been done and CUA fell 69-63 despite an inspired comeback in the final minutes. Linderoth led the squad with 14 points as well as 13 rebounds and DeBorger added 13 in her career game. The Cards outrebounded the Ospreys 40-31 but committed 23 turnovers.
CUA will take a break for the holidays before hosting Susquehanna on December 30.
