Cardinals Ousted by Mariners
KINGS, N.Y.- A tough night at the freethrow line and a lack of interior rebounding proved to be the downfall of the CUA women's basketball team Saturday night, as they dropped a conference game to the United States Merchant Marine Academy 70-56. The Cardinals (9-5 overall) now drop to 2-1 in the Landmark Conference.
After jumping out to a 12-4 lead, the Red and Black allowed Merchant Marine to go on a 15-6 run midway through the first half. A lay-up by junior Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin High School) gave CUA a 32-30 lead as the Cards headed to the locker room.
CUA opened up the second half trading back and forth buckets with their opponent. A pair of freethrows by sophomore Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) and a jumper by Robinson extended the Cardinal lead early. After the seventh tie of the contest, the Mariners finally pulled away with 12:31 to play and never relinquished their lead.
Peterson ended the game with 18 points, while Robinson ended with 12 points, four steals, and four rebounds. Sophomore Jenn Canale (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) finished the night with six points, six rebounds, and three assists.
The Cardinals will look to bounce back next weekend with home contests on Friday against Moravian at 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday against Scranton at 2:00 p.m.
