Women's Basketball Sneaks Past St. Mary's
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.- The Catholic University of America women's basketball team ran away with their second win of the season, defeating non-conference opponent St. Mary's College (Md.) 72-68.
The Cards found themselves trailing 19-9 in the opening minutes of the game. With nine and a half minutes to go, CUA's Lauren McPeak (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) provided a defensive spark that led to three consecutive steals and a 9-2 run in favor of the Cardinals. The squad also shot 80% from the charity stripe, and forced the St. Mary's into18 turnovers. By halftime, CUA had secured a 31-28 lead over the Seahawks.
After halftime, the two teams battled back and forth before the Cardinals jumped out to a 15 point lead. The Cards were able to convert transition opportunities into made buckets largely due to the defensive tenacity of junior Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin High School) and freshman Brielle Crites (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) with four and two steals, respectively.
The Seahawks were able to claw their way back from the 15 point deficit. With thirty seconds to go, a layup by Megan Seeman brought St. Mary's within two points. Remaining calm, the Cards inbounded the ball and found Jen Canale (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) who scored the buzzer-beating shot to secure a four point victory.
CUA's Briana Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) recorded a career high and lead all scorers in the contest, contributing an impressive 32 points on 13-25 shooting. Peterson also added 9 boards and 2 steals. Teammate McPeak had a breakout game for the Cards, racking up 15 points, 9 rebounds, six blocks, and five steals. Point guard Kerri Confrey (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) tallied 7 points and dished out six assists in the win.
