Cardinals Dominate in Conference Opener
TOWSON, Md.- The Catholic University of America women's basketball team rolled to a 78-49 victory over Goucher College Saturday evening in their first Landmark conference game of the season.
After trading baskets with the Gophers, CUA went on a 14-0 run to gain a comfortable 20-5 lead midway through the half. Goucher did their best to chip away at the deficit, but the Cardinals remained calm and continued to work the ball inside the paint. Sophomore forward Brianna Peterson (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) scored 12 of her 22 points in the closing minutes of the first half, and Catholic University went into the locker room with a 41-25 advantage.
CUA continued to apply defensive pressure from the beginning of the second half. Back-to-back buckets by sophomore guard Kelly Ryan (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) sparked a 10-4 run in CUA's favor. The Cards finished the game with a 79-48 victory.
Leading the way for Catholic University was Peterson with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Kate Robinson (Emmitsburg, Md./Catoctin High School) gave another solid performance, tallying 15 points, 8 boards, and three assists. Jennifer Canale (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) also recorded 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
The Cards will return to the hardwood on December 19th for a road game at Neumann College. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
